Thermador Innovation: Groundbreaking “Firsts” From the First 50 Years

The first 50 years of Thermador were remarkable – we changed the way appliances were viewed, sparked life into the kitchen design industry, and began our legacy of innovation. This was a special time in Thermador history, and we’d like to share a few of our favorite ‘firsts’ from these decades.
Today, this 100-year-old brand is well known for its innovative appliances, and historically we have always pushed the limits with innovative appliances. Before Thermador even began producing kitchen appliances, we were developing and introducing innovative products that had never been heard of before.
As “The Kitchen of the Future” began to take shape and more Americans expressed a growing interest in kitchen design, Thermador innovation produced the world’s first wall oven with a matching cooktop in 1947 – making it possible to be more creative with how appliances were incorporated into the kitchen. While other manufacturers were producing colorful tile and white appliances during this time period Thermador also pioneered the first stainless steel kitchen.
The brand showed no signs of slowing down, and during the 1950s introduced the first Pro Range, which was a stunning 48” stainless steel appliance featuring six burners and dual ovens. This appliance has greatly evolved since the 50s, and just in time for our 100th anniversary we are introducing a groundbreaking 60” Pro Grand® Range Collection, the perfect culinary tool for today’s ultimate culinary enthusiast and entertainer.
In 1952 Thermador introduced the first electric cooktop, combined with a smooth griddle, which continued to provide Americans with a wide selection of appliances and cooking surfaces. Personalization is a very hot trend right now, but as we take a look into the past it’s evident that Thermador established itself as a brand that provides real cooks with choices that enable them to shape the heart of their home around their unique style.
In 1952 Thermador introduced the first warming drawer to the American kitchen – a supplementary appliance that allowed culinary enthusiasts to keep bread rolls and side dishes warm while putting the finishing touches on a meal. This new product also allowed the host to bring a restaurant quality experience to guests with warm plates, something that had never before been offered within the home.
As kitchen design trends evolved more Americans enjoyed the look of built-in appliances, and in 1957 Thermador brought the first “Bilt-In” residential refrigerator to the market. Now culinary and design enthusiasts were able to create a complete Thermador kitchen with stainless steel, built-in appliances!
The United States underwent a significant economic shift during the 1960s as women entered the workforce in greater numbers. During this time period the kitchen was still seen as a woman’s domain, but as traditional gender roles began to be redefined and women took jobs outside of the home there was growing interest in conveniences to make household chores simpler. Conveniences like the first self-cleaning oven, which Thermador created and introduced in 1963 and is still a popular oven feature to this day.
Throughout its history, Thermador innovation has set numerous trends so it’s not surprising that the brand was the first to take a bold leap and kick-off a 40+ year trend with the first black glass oven door fronts. This style has carried into modern day, and you can see is still prominent even among the newest appliances being introduced to the industry.
During our first 50 years, Thermador introduced many other products to the market, such as the first ever built-in can opener, the first stainless steel dishwasher and different sizes of cooktops allowing multiple configurations. A true trendsetter, Thermador was, and continues to be, a brand that is committed to being a leader in the kitchen industry and producing innovative appliance for the culinary enthusiast.
Awesome!!! I’ve always been a huge fan of Thermador products and am in the process of planning my new kitchen which will include the latest Freedom Masterpiece induction cooktop. You guys are the best!!!
I have 2 1947 built- in ovens and 1 cook-top same vintage? (4 in a row) that I have extras of and are for sale. I over bought when re-habbing a hunting lodge in Gates Mills, Ohio…. I used one built-in oven and one cook top range, (have great pictures of finished kitchen if you like). I hunted all over for them years ago, and I need to find a good home for them….. thanks, Dan. 216.299.1084
House built in 50’s, we have 4 top electric drop in range & 2 electric ovens. Looking to update to gas convection oven with gas range combo. Any suggestions or advertising replacing the old with the new?
I had the pleasure of being a Thermador demonstrator for ten years and working for Thermador under Rocky in Huntington beach. I is one of my most memorible experiences ever. In 1999 I purchased the 48″ all gas range . Many meals have been bbq, cooked and baked for sooo many enjoyable eating experiences. We make tamales for a business and literally hundreds have been made for people to savor.
Our son and daughter in law recently purchaded a home and it has both the original electric stainless steel oven and electric cooktop with the griddle and all appliances are in working order! I purchased a thermador stainless steel dishwasher for them as a housewarming gift to complete their all Thermador kitchen. It’s so totally retro and appreciated. Thank You Thermador for being the leader in cooking experiences for foodies like us.
This is just awesome!
Had to send my beloved 1952 Thermador Electric Cooktop and Bilt-in Range (with warmer) to pasture a couple years ago.
Worked like a charm for 60 years with just one minor repair in all that time!
Sure do miss it.
I still have a stainless wall oven and 5 burner cooktop from 1963 in everyday use.
Cool article. Love the old photos. When did Thermador transition to gas ranges? Interesting to see the old ads stressing that Thermador was all-electric at that time.
We have in our kitchen, still working, the original countertop with center grill and stainless steel built-in oven. Pictures available.
I have the first former tour pro range it still works very good I do need one burner so if you have it please let me know other that I’m very happy with the product
I have the very first former tour pro range that came out in 1950 I am missing one one eye other than that it looks wonderful I’m very happy with the item
We first used Thermador some 40 years ago in a custom home. It was a shock when we discovered that the wall oven needed to be vented, wish you still did that. We were lucky, were on an outside wall. About 30 years ago we installed Thermador cooking equipment and dishwasher in our own home under construction. The oven and micro have been updated, new warming drawer, new Bosch dw and induction cooktop. ,. We are custom home builders. From our experience with the equipment that is what we recommend. I have told many customers that we will not warrant the dw performance unless they select Bosch or Thermador.

It is simply amazing to see how far we have come with home appliances. I will have to see if my grandmother still has any older Thermador appliances. It would be really interesting to get a before and after picture with our new appliances!
