Chosen from a record-breaking turnout of entries, the 2019-2022 Thermador Kitchen Design Challenge results are here.
The Thermador Kitchen Design Challenge offers designers, builders, architects and students the opportunity to enter their designs in a national competition that offers nationwide industry recognition and cash prizes. Additionally, the winners received national coverage on Architectural Digest as part of their prize package.
The entries were judged by an expert panel, including: Eddie Ross, Author and Co-founder and Chief Content Creator of Maximalist Studios; Kristina LoMonaco, Design Council Member and Founder of a NYC Design Firm; Breeze Giannasio, design firm founder and known for her work on HGTV, Brother vs. Brother and Property Brothers at Home; and Nathan Turner, Special Projects Editor at Architectural Digest, and Contributing Editor at C Magazine.
The winners left no detail untouched in their exquisite designs. Get ready to be inspired by the latest trends, classic elements, and unique touches of the winning spaces.
National Award Winner: Grand Prize Exceptional Kitchen – Curves and Bevels
The Grand Prize winner is a beautiful, warm, white kitchen by Julie Howard of Julie Howard Home Design for Timber Trails. The showstopping curved details add personality to a classically colored space.
This eye-catching design was created to be part of a concept kitchen/family room. It features a coffered and shiplapped ceiling to add warmth and character to the large space. Central to the room is a large island with a jumbo slab of Caesarstone, which serves as the heart of the home. 2nd Place Grand Prize Exceptional Kitchen Award – Shingle Style
At Thermador, we love our blues! Our second-place kitchen by Dane Austin of Dane Austin Design, Inc. features a two-tone hood and a bold cabinetry color that exude character.
Designed to invoke feelings of nostalgia, this kitchen is a seamlessly modern update to its early 20th century home. The intent of the space was to make it feel like it could always have been this way, which was achieved through custom door fronts and vintage elements including tile, lighting, and period trim. 3rd Place Grand Prize Exceptional Kitchen Award – Modern European Rambler
Neutrals are anything but basic in our third-place winner by Dalia Carter of Carbon 6 Interiors, expertly accented by natural stone and gold hardware.
Designed for a high-traffic model home, this kitchen was created to appeal to a highly discerning audience. Combining the best of style and functionality with the latest kitchen technology, the space is highlighted by custom white oak cabinetry and a quartz backsplash. Special Category National Winner: Compact Kitchen Suite Award – The Sip & Ski Lodge
Bold, bright and balanced come to mind when taking in the stunning Sip & Ski Lodge space by Ella Wynsma of Jean Stoffer Design.
Part of a unique, historically significant home, this kitchen restoration was intended to be the focal point of the floor plan. Promoting connectivity between the meal preparers and visitors, the space features layers of scaled lighting, mixed metals, and a large island for gathering. Special Category National Winner: Compact Kitchen Suite Award – The Cottages at Harris Ranch
Cozy meets chic in this gorgeous cottage kitchen by Hailie Lewis of Design VIM.
This kitchen effortlessly refreshes the modern farmhouse design style while creating a palette that is both familiar and unexpected. Finishes were chosen to be comfortable but not boring, for a timeless look and feel. Special Category National Winner: Original Innovator Award – Casa Del Acantilado
Nothing makes a statement in the kitchen quite like a bold kitchen island, and we’re obsessed with this organic wooden showstopper in this PureHaven Homes design by Shane Harr.
Creating a beautiful kitchen that honors the architecture of the home and its desert mountain surroundings, this space juxtaposes sleek contemporary finishes with organic elements. The resulting design provides a modern rustic feel that complements the breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains. Special Category National Winner: Student Design Award – To Weather the Storm
Last but not least, our student award winner is Holly Lord Sherrell from the University of Georgia, whose design concept features open shelving, arched doorways and a cohesive color palette.
Incorporating interesting and natural shapes, patterns, and materials while still reflecting a sense of luxury, this kitchen was designed to create a fun space for a family to gather and connect.
